The World Will Be Meeting in Brazil

In a few months time, half a million people will cross oceans to get to South America in order to celebrate the biggest event for the most loved sport on the planet: soccer. Soccer is not the most beloved sport in the United States but times are changing are more and more people are embracing this competent sport. In fact, over 150,000 Americans already have tickets to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. On June 12, the first of eighty-four matches kicks off in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Thirty-two countries come from around the world to claim the entitlement for the most prominent award there is in soccer. Oh, and did I mention that this festive occasion turns into a month-long party?  You can think of the World Cup as a cross between the Olympics and the Super Bowl, except that the fan base has tripled and their passion for the game has turned into their creed.
So, you might ask "Why should I go to Brazil?" For starters, there are two things that Brazilians have mastered: playing soccer and hosting a party. Famously known for the flamboyant festivals, Brazil has had some practice throwing a party for half a million people. Carnival in Rio is a spectacle in itself and remains one of the biggest celebrations across the globe. Additionally, soccer has been claimed to be Brazil’s unofficial religion. Combine these two elements together and you get an epic sporting celebration that you won’t see again in your lifetime (it's been sixty-four years since Brazil last hosted the World Cup). Add a beautiful countryside with beaches, rainforests, waterfalls, and welcoming hosts, and you've just stumbled upon paradise.
Down below, I have compiled three different genres that buoyantly demonstrate why you should pack up your bags and fly to south to Brazil to attend this year’s World Cup. The first one, a brochure, will give you a look into Brazil and soccer and help you learn a little more about each. Second, I have made my own list of reasons of why YOU need to attend the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Some are aimed more towards you sports fanatics, while others are aimed for the traveler at heart. Last, I have made a promotional video that should fill you with excitement and keenness, convincing you that this is the dream vacation you have been fantasizing about.

Think About It

What is the FIFA World Cup?

The FIFA World Cup is a global association, which is responsible for putting on the biggest single-sporting event in the world. The superstars of (mens) soccer come together to determine which country deserves the World Cup championship title. Every four years, on a different continent, countries unite and celebrate being alive and show their undying support for their national team.

Welcome to Brazil

Brazil’s massive country takes up half of the South American continent, making it an extremely versatile environment satisfying the needs of most travelers. The country has picturesque landscapes and beaches, a thriving culture, and is home to some of the friendliest people in the world. Here, you can find people who still practice ancient agricultural techniques deep in the Amazon or upscale cosmopolitan gastronomies. The country lives for hope and passion, which is best demonstrated through their love for soccer.

Expand Your Horizons

It's time to get our passports stamped and see the world! Traveling gives you a fresh perspective on things and helps your dreams come true. Unfortunately, not enough Americans are doing it. While traveling domestically has it's advantages, less than 10% of Americans have ever left our nation. Of that 10%, less than 2% have been to Brazil (chart below). What better chance to experience other countries than to attend the World Cup in Brazil?

Brazil has so much to offer our great nation. The list below gives you a quick introduction to what makes the country thrive.

Beaches

Brazil contains the largest collections of balmy shores on the planet! There are over 1,500 beaches to explore over the 5,000 miles of sandy shorelines.

Landscape

Brazil holds record levels for wildlife numbers and diversity. Brazil is the homeland to the Amazon rainforest, the Pantanal wetland, the coastal rainforest of Mata Atlantica, and the lavishing waterfalls of Iguacu Falls

People

Brazilians are made up from such a mix of ethnicities and races that it can be hard to define what it means to be Brazilian. To borrow from Benny Lewis, Brazilians are, “friendly, social, nice, healthy, optimists, hygienic, warm, smart, beautiful, relaxed, and proud.” They sound like the perfect hosts for outsiders!

Song & Dance

If you’re one of those people who love to shake it - or maybe you just enjoy watching other shakers - you’ll enjoy every minute of Brazil. The country moves to a rhythm of the drums. Keep an eye out for sitings of Samba, Maxixe (Brazilian tango), and Capoeira (martial arts that combines dance, acrobatics and music).

Soccer & Sport

The official religion of Brazil is Roman Catholicism; the actual religion of the country is soccer. Being the best team in the world means having utmost devotees. Watching locals play soccer can be seen everywhere, like the beach, streets, parks, and in clubs. In fact, they've won the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup thirteen times. Or if you’re near the beach, make sure that you check out footvolley (below)!

25 Reasons Why You Should Plan to Be at the World Cup in Brazil!

1. Making history - If Spain wins, they will be considered the best team of all time: This could be history in the making. However

2. Brazil is favored to win - Experts give them 3 - 1 odds. Witnessing Brazil win the World Cup on their own soil will be the "largest explosion of happiness the planet has ever seen." Plus, Brazil is considered to be the best soccer team in the world. Bring it on Spain!

3. Soccer Superstars - You are guaranteed to watch the biggest players in the world, on the biggest stage (Mind=Blown). If you don't know much about the stars of soccer, remember these three names: Messi, Ronaldo, and Neymar. Messi and Ronaldo are the best strikers in the world right now. Neymar is Brazil's up-and-coming star, and this is his first World Cup. Big things could happen!

4. US might be the Cinderella in this story - There's always one, and this might belong to America.

5. ALL the big nations have qualified - This rarely happens and gives us exciting games ahead.

6. Legacy - Brazil's legacy is the most recognized in the world due to their exceptional soccer skills. They currently hold the most World Cup championships, and will be playing for their sixth.

7. The fans - It goes without saying that the World Cup wouldn't be an epic event without it's devoted fan base. Even if you aren't a die-hard soccer fan, one game in Brazil and you will be converted. Being in Brazil for a soccer game is like watching an epic band play, even if you don't care about them, it will effect you in a positive light.

8. Safety - Brazil will be safer than you think. Over three-quarters of a billion dollars has been spent of security alone, so you can put your mind at ease.

9. It gives you another reason to learn another language - Having a chat with a local in Portuguese will be one of the most satisfying moments of your life!

10. Beach footvolley - Originating in Brazil, this is the classic game of volleyball, only omitting the use of your hands. Yes, only your head, chest, and feet can be used to hit the ball over the net. Seriously, one of the coolest sports I've ever seen! And Brazilians are some of the finest at this sport.

11. Beaches, bikinis, and babes - Brazil literally has the most attractive beaches and people in the world, and they don't like to wear much.

12. Rio de Janiero - Rio is one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world.

13. The Maracana - If there is one stadium to see in the world, Rio de Janiero's Maracana is it! And this stadium just got a face lift.

14. Comparatively Lower Prices - Besides the hefty prices for accommodations, Brazil's prices are a lot cheaper than the States. I'm sure that you'll find that a $2.50 beer will satisfy your thirst. :)

15. Churrasco - This is the Brazilian term for authentic barbecue. For you meat lovers out there, meat doesn't taste any better than this. Have you ever been to Fogo de Chao? Guess where it originated?

16. Gastronomy - Speaking of food, Brazil is a country filled with diverse and authentic restaurants.

17. Fruit, drink and coffee - Many delicious tropical fruits come from Brazil including the famous açaí berry, which can be found everywhere. Coconuts and caipirinhas (the national drink) will keep you hydrated and happy. As for coffee, a third of the world's coffee comes from Brazil and is known for it's distinctive flavor.

18. The Wonders - It's hard to narrow down all the beauties but the most well known are the Amazon, Pantanal, Foz do Iguaçu (Iguaçu Falls), and Christ the Redeemer statue.

19. Fan Fests - Yes, this is a real thing. What started out as a test run in Germany's 2006 World Cup turned into a huge success and is officially part of the tradition. So, if you don't have tickets to the game you can still celebrate it with thousands of other fans who will be celebrating.

20. Ambience - The energy of soccer fans is the highest and most concentrated in the world at this event, and emotions will be stronger than ever. Have you ever seen a bunch of grown men cry? Well, at the World Cup you will see plenty.

21. Brazilians - They are known for their generosity towards foreigners and ostentatious celebrations. Brazilians definitely know how to show the world a good time.

22. Month-long celebration - Nothing will prepare you for the spectacle of the World Cup. The entire country, along with over half a million tourists from thirty-two countries, will erupt into celebration. Fans will not be disappointed with the cultural's vibrancy and passion.

23. Commentaries -

Do I need to say more?

24. Next Stop: Russia - The next World Cup will be held in Russia, and if the tension between to US and Russia doesn't ease up, my guess is that Americans may not be welcomes to the country. (After all, they did ask FIFA to remove us for this World Cup.)

25. Number 1 - Lonely Planet has listed Brazil as the world's number one must-visit country of 2014!

2014 FIFA World Cup Promo Video

The Aftermath: Explanation Piece

My argument for this project is that I am going to use three genres to create an argument and promote that Americans should attend the 2014 World Cup in Brazil this summer. My first genre is a brochure-like information sheet with pictures and charts, which gives brief information about traveling, Brazil, and soccer. My original plan was to make a brochure but after much time was wasted and unsuccessful attempts on uploading it to my blog, I’ve decided to create a similar appearance posted up directly on my blog board. For my second genre, I’ve compiled a list of twenty-five reasons to go to the World Cup in Brazil. My list comes from several articles that I’ve read and reasons that consistently appeared, along with my own ideas throughout reading and research. Lastly, I made a promotion video inspired by the works of many others, but tailored it to the World Cup in Brazil. The promotional video is a mix-up of videos that I found on YouTube that I cut and personalized to my own song, which is the official 2014 World Cup song by Shakira. I think the song fits perfectly, as it is upbeat, talks about the World Cup and Brazil, and contains a Brazilian dance beat.
My audience is Americans who like sporting events, traveling, soccer, or large festivals. I would say that this piece might even appeal to a younger (and possibly broader) crowd. I have chosen this audience because my subject and genres will likely attract them. Additionally, they will be the most likely audience to consider this event, even though they’ve probably never put much thought into it. As if this were a real piece open to the public, they must first make the first step in googling trips or events. My goal is that by the time my audience finishes reading (and watching) my blog, they will say, “I want to go!!!.” That is the ultimate goal here. I want my readers to get excited about this once in a lifetime event and encourage them to take a chance and admire the beauty of the world from another culture’s perspective.
Figuring out what information was needed to complete my argument was quite difficult for me. Ultimately, I decided that I needed to have my “brochure” as an informative explaining a few details I felt that was necessary. Then, I used my twenty-five reasons to persuade my audience why going to the World Cup is such a great idea. My last genre is for entertainment purposes but if you watch closely you will see many details that will tell you a lot about Brazil. The order of my genres is important because without them I don’t think they would fit well together. This is why I had to reverse the order of my blog postings, so that the order goes from top to bottom. First, we have an introduction. Then, reasoning. Last, my visuals bring out an emotional side and hopefully make my audience excited.
In this, my tone is friendly, relaxed, and humorous in that I want the reader to feel that I am just as excited as I want them to be about this spectacular event. The World Cup is most likely to attract younger, livelier crows that like to have a good time. I want my tone to reflect this. Total professionalism wouldn’t work in this piece because it would come off as a bore, which is the total opposite of what I want. Emotions play a big role in my argument and if I don’t sound zealous and excited, how can I expect my audience to reflect the same energy?
The information from my last research paper is more on comparing whether hosting the World Cup will be beneficial for the country. Because the objective of this piece is to enlighten and motivate viewers to go to Brazil, pointing out the negative facts that I learned about hosting the World Cup would not be effective here. For this to happen, I had to do some additional research that related more to the advantages of attending the World Cup. I was able to extract some information, such as Brazil as a country and it’s characteristics.
If I were to have more time on this project or were to do it over again, I might change my thesis a little bit. My project would be directed towards people who are already heading to Brazil for the World Cup, and try to provide helpful suggestions that would help benefit the country more than it would FIFA. This information might include alternative options of where to stay, what tourist attractions there are (besides World Cup), and where to go souvenir shopping. My past research essay question was, “Is hosting the World Cup beneficial for Brazil?” In this project, it would be “Ways to spend your time and money during the World Cup in Brazil so that Brazilians benefit the most.” This would be a project that I could build more upon with direct information that I already have (from me research essay), but I don’t feel that there was enough time to accomplish this. For this project, I wanted to keep my thesis and project pretty simple since I knew that time was a concern. Producing quality work was key so I had to make my thesis modest in order to achieve this.
On a final note, I wanted to talk about my resources. I used various sites throughout this project and all of them can be found throughout the blog, with a specific word hyperlinked. Not all of the hyperlinks are direct sources. I wanted my audience to be able to locate further readings if they desired to. To me, the more information that they read, even through various sites, the bigger the impact that this will have on them.
In summary, I enjoyed this project very much. The creativity and use of visuals made this whole process enjoyable. I put time and enthusiasm into every post and genuinely enjoyed it!  I hope that you enjoyed seeing the final product as well!
